The Sony Vaio VPC-EH1Z1E/B in Europe or Sony VAIO VPC-EH17FX/B in the U.S. was recently reviewed and rated to be an 80/100 laptop by reviewers. The specific Sony VAIO EH Series laptop is sold currently in Europe for €699.00 and in the U.S. you can find some new or refurbished models for around $799. Now this laptop and it’s review interested me for really one reason and one reason only, the laptop was a perfect example of a manufacturer including features that don’t make sense together.

You see the Intel Core i5-2410M powered 15.5-inch laptop from Sony that was reviewed featured a Blu-ray player and a 1366-by-768 resolution display. With that combo of features Sony managed to include two wildly contrasting technologies in one system. Sony has included a modern optical media solution that can playback Blu-ray discs, the standard for high-definition physical media, inside a laptop that ships with a 1366-by-768 resolution LED display, barely a high-definition resolution.

With a Blu-ray player built-in to the laptop having a Full HD or 1920-by-1080 resolution LED display would have been a better match. As it is the 1366-by-768 pixels that the Sony VAIO EH Series laptop offers isn’t enough to take full advantage of the Blu-ray player that comes equipped with the laptop. As a user you will be subject to a substandard viewing experience for Blu-rays with this laptop due mostly to the display.

The Sony VAIO EH Series laptops screen quality (looking beyond the resolution limitation) isn’t anything to write home about in terms of quality, if we’re to be tough on it. Color reproduction, Black levels , contrast, and of course viewing angles are only average for the laptop and for comparison’s sake the display is on par with your run-of-the-mill low-end laptop.

With the Sony VAIO EH Series laptop you’ll probably find yourself just using this the laptops built-in DVD/Blu-ray player as your mobile DVD/Blu-ray player for your television. You’ll be able to hook the Sony VAIO EH Series laptop to any HDTV that features a HDMI-in connector because the laptop does have a HDMI-out port (laptop doesn’t ship with an HDMI cable so you’ll have to provide your own).
