The fourth ultraportable Lenovo ThinkPad X series laptop for the budget concise community is about to be released, according to Lenovo who announced the new 11.6″ Lenovo ThinkPad X130e laptop would be released in North America on December 20, 2011 with a starting price of $469.
According to Lenovo the new X130e has been designed to fit into the education sector that educates children from K-12 in the United States. Lenovo says their portable X130e is equipped with a ruggedized design from top to bottom. Durability enhancements detailed by Lenovo in their press release are as follows:
- A top cover rubber bumper to absorb impacts to the side of the laptop
- 33 percent stronger corner to reduce the chance of damage when dropped at an angle
- Stronger hinges to outlast even the most frequent PC user at up to 30,000 cycles
- Reinforced and recessed ports to decrease the effects of student “wear and tear”
- Stronger Bezel with 1.2mm thick plastic to protect the LED panel
Looking beyond the rugged design the new Lenovo ThinkPad X130e features enough computing power to push kids, or most anyone else for that matter, through any computing tasks they could want. Processing capabilities for the ThinkPad X130e can be handled by either a 1.3 GHz AMD Fusion E-300 APU (dual-core) or 1.65 GHz AMD Fusion E-450 APU (dual-core) or Intel’s second generation “Sandy Bridge” 1.4 GHz Core i3-2367M ULV (dual-core) processor.
To compare the three processing solutions that Lenovo will offer for ThinkPad X130e buyers it’s a bit tricky and the outcome can vary depending on how Lenovo has each chip setup for the X130e. From the benchmarks (Core i3, E-300, E-450) the Intel Core i3 is the most powerful CPU, but in graphics the Intel’s integrated HD Graphics 3000 IGP isn’t up to par with the AMD Radeon HD 6310 integrated GPU included with the AMD E-300 and E-450 APUs. However until there are reviews for the X130e it’s not possible to say whether the Core i3 configuration that will cost you the most money will be able to backup the high price tag with more performance than the 1.65 GHz AMD E-450 APU (top-end AMD option for the X130e).
Main features for the Lenovo ThinkPad X130e:
- Windows 7 OS
- 11.6-inch LED backlit LCD
- CPU options - 1.3 GHz AMD Fusion E-300 APU (dual-core); 1.65 GHz AMD Fusion E-450 APU (dual-core); 1.4 GHz Intel Core i3-2367M ULV
- 2GB of DDR3 RAM for base model but the X130e is upgradable to 8GB of RAM
- Up to 500GB Hard Disk Drive storage
- 120GB SSD optional and it includes under 20 second boot-up times with Lenovo’s RapidBoot technology.
- 3x USB 2.0, HDMI, VGA, Ethernet, headphone/mic jack, and a 4-in-1 memory card reader
- Ethernet LAN, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0
- 6-cell Lithium-ion battery; up to 8.5 hours of battery life
- Weight – 3.93 lbs (1.78kg) with 6-cell battery
A price that I expected
Lenovo’s planned starting price of $469 isn’t that surprising for me, earlier last month when we first heard details and saw a photo of the new ThinkPad X130e I predicted that Lenovo would start pricing in the $400USD range. I reasoned that considering how much more powerful the X130e is compared to $300USD range netbook computers it made good sense for Lenovo to charge a bit more for the better computer, the ThinkPad X130e.
