It seems like PC vendors are really doing their best to get faster and faster boot times for their laptop computers, and I and anyone else who values their time should be very pleased by that. However now some vendors are venturing off and designing their own light operating systems that offer users instant-on computing if all they need is a web browser or access to some photo/music/video/document files.
The light operating systems are installed right along with Microsoft’s Windows operating system, users get the chance to choose whether they boot into Windows or into the light OS right after they push the power button on their machines. The most popular method of having two operating systems on one computer is called dual booting, dual booting two operating systems requires no extra hardware beyond what currently powers your computer.
Now Lenovo is about to introduce a new laptop that offers an advanced dual-boot experience that does use separate hardware to access the non-Windows operating system.
Earlier today Lenovo confirmed that they will soon be launching a new laptop computer that includes two operating systems. The 13.3″ Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Hybrid features an Intel CPU and a Qualcomm ARM CPU all on the same motherboard, I’ve never heard of another laptop coming with such a setup.
Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Hybrid requires two processors because the secondary operating system only supports ARM processing chips, the secondary OS in described as an instant-on OS because users can boot into instantly without waiting. According to Lenovo the instant-on OS is based on the Android OS kernel, Android OS is a mobile operating system which currently holds considerable market share in the mobile phone market. Lenovo will be calling their lightweight OS “Instant Media Mode” and it should boost battery life to over 10 hours for the ThinkPad X1 Hybrid laptop when it’s being used.
Other than the new Instant-on OS the new ThinkPad X1 Hybrid will be a lot like the current Lenovo ThinkPad X1 ultraportable laptop. The main specifications will include a 13.3-inch HD (1366×768) Gorilla Glass display with 350-nit brightness, Intel Core i3/i5/i7 processors, integrated Intel graphics, 3G and Wi-Fi, optional battery life extending slice, and the laptop weights 3.7-pounds.
Lenovo plans to start prices for the ThinkPad X1 Hybrid at $1,599 USD when they launch the laptop computer during the second quarter of 2012.
