Earlier today Samsung announced a new flagship premium Ultrabook for the companies ATIV line of Windows computers. Named Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus this new 13-inch Ultrabook is set to compete against the likes of Apple’s 13-inch Macbook Air when it starts to ship globally in Q3. Announced without a base price at this time Samsung is talking about the many features consumers can expect to see with the companies replacement for the Samsung Series 9.
Keeping with the Ultrabook distinction the new Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus offers a very slim and stylish design. Measuring just 13.6 mm thick at the thickest point of its wedge-shape design the new ATIV Book 9 Plus is thinner than the outgoing Series 9, and with a weight of just 1.39 kg the new ATIV Book 9 Plus is also lighter than the Series 9.

Just like with the now-0ld Samsung Series 9 line the comparisons to Apple’s recently refreshed Macbook Air ultra-thin-and-portable laptops is inevitable. However right off the bat you should know that Samsung has gone to great lengths to equip their ATIV Book 9 Plus with a premium feature you just won’t find on Apple’s comparable Macbook Air.
That premium feature is the 13-inch display offered with the ATIV Book 9 Plus. The 13-inch display the ATIV Book 9 Plus will feature comes with a native resolution that is 2.8-times that of a Full HD 1080p display and the display also supports touch for Windows 8. Lacking touch the 13-inch Apple Macbook Air’s native resolution of less than Full HD (1,440 x 900) isn’t competitive compared to the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus which has a QHD+ native resolution (3,200 x 1,800). Also while having a touch and a pixel density equal to 270ppi the Samsung offers Gorilla Glass protection, a 72 percent color gamut, and a hinge that allows you to bend the screen back to 178 degrees.
Samsung’s new laptop will offer 12 hours of battery life just like the 13-inch Apple Macbook Air, too. The processors that will be included with the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus are Core i5 and i7 brand chips from the new 4th gen. Haswell family, just like with the refreshed 13-inch Macbook Air. Also like Apple’s comparable laptop the ATIV Book 9 Plus will offer up to 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of SSD storage.
Really from the Samsung’s presentation of the new ATIV Book 9 Plus today the only real advantage Apple’s 13-inch refreshed Macbook Air appears to have over the Samsung is in weight, the 13-inch Macbook Air weighs 1.35 kg while the ATIV Book 9 Plus weighs 1.39 kg.
However with no in-depth review the real comparison between the new Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus and the latest Apple Macbook Air is still yet to be seen. Samsung also hasn’t announced how they plan to price their new laptop, if priced higher than the $1,099 (starting) 13-inch Macbook Air the value of the better display will need to really be considered for this new Samsung.
